There I was, pantingly half-running down the streets of the Capital Hill neighborhood, tantalized by the scent of grilled meat billowing around me. Others on the same sidewalk were giving me a half grin, almost by way of a secret handshake: yes, we're headed there, too, and we can hardly wait. What the heck was I doing?
I had read an article on street food in Bon Appetit (June issue), and noticed that one of the few street carts mentioned by name was RIGHT HERE IN SEATTLE! Then I couldn't stop myself from using the next opportunity to find it for myself. I have to admit that part of the intrigue was locating a "restaurant" that moves every day, has a shifting menu, and frequently runs out of items during service. Would I be lucky enough to score some food? Nay, would I even be able to find it?
There was no need to fear, because once I drove into the vicinity, I was greeted by the most delicious smell imaginable. The guy taking orders was super friendly and we chit chatted while my food cooked. It was all I could do to keep from jumping up through the service window and trying to watch the chefs cook...I've obviously been watching too much Food Network.
Finally they handed out a simple brown box containing a medium sized burger (called "The Burger" on the menu) and a ginormous stack of hand-cut fries. I nonchalantly closed it up, and run-walked back to my car, where I proceeded to stuff my face, lick my fingers, and sop up the juices with the brioche bun. I do not know what "cambazola" or "bacon jam" is; I only know that when I die and go to heaven, I expect to be eating that stuff. The fries were crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and scented with herbs. Everything I want from a french fry.
I am already secretly plotting my next visit to the silver trailer of goodness. I've heard tell of an amazing pork sammie...
So I ask you, am I becoming a foodie? Does that mean I'm going to have to start eating cow brains or something?
For those of you lucky enough to live near here, here's the website for Skillet. Enjoy!
